CONTROVERSIAL JUDGE

Supreme Court president Ahron Barak has nominated controversial Beershebajudge Oded Alyagon for a seat on the Tel Aviv District Court, the daily Haaretz reported on December 4. The nomination was opposed by Justice Minister Yossi Beilin, who noted the judges history of racist remarks and politically incorrect actions. During his tenure on the Beersheba Magistrates Court Alyagon referred to ultra-Orthodox politicians as "parasites" and refused to make arrangements that would allow a disabled attorney to access his chambers. Justice Barak nominated Alyagon for a similar position in 1999 but withdrew the nomination following similar objections from Beilin and Absorbtion Minister Yuli Tamir, the other cabinet minister on the Committee for the Selection of Judges.
