INTIFADA WATCH:
Four members of the IDF's Desert Patrol unit � Maj. Ashraf Hawash, 28, Sgt. Maj. Ibrahim Hamadieh, 23, Sgt. Maj. Hani Abu-Ghanem all Beduin, and Staff Sgt. Holid Suweid, an Arab Christian � were killed when two suicide terrorists broke into an outpost on the Israeli side of the Gaza border on January 9. The attackers wore Palestine Authority uniforms, but Hamas claimed credit for the attack.
Israel responded by bulldozing Palestinian homes in Rafah. It claimed the homes were unoccupied and used as military positions; the PA says hundreds of people were made homeless.
� Raed Karmi, 27, of Fatah Tanzim, died in an explosion in Tul Karm on the West Bank on January 14. Israel did not admit responsibility, but said Karmi was responsible for the death of nine Israelis.
� Sgt. Elad Abu-Gain, 19, was killed in a Fatah ambush near Tul Karm, a few hours after Karmi's death. Israeli American Avi Boaz, 71, was kidnapped at a PA checkpoint near Bethlehem the next day. His bullet-riddled body was found hours later in his car at Beit Sahur, east of Bethlehem. Also on January 15, Yoela Chen, 45, was shot dead by two Palestinians as she drove into a gas station near her home at Givat Ze'ev, on the West Bank north of Jerusalem. Shehadeh Dadis, 30, a Palestinian from East Jerusalem, was killed in a drive-by shooting south of Jenin on January 16. His car had Israeli license plates.
HADERAH ATTACK: Six Israelis � Edward Bakshayev, 48, and Anatoly Bakshayev, 63, of Or Akiva; Aharon Ben-Yisrael Ellis, 32, of Ra'ananah; Dina Binayev, 48, of Ashkelon; Boris Melikhov, 56, of Sderot; and Avi Yazdi, 25, of Haderah were killed when a Fatah terrorist broke into Nina Kardashov's bat mitzvah reception in Haderah and opened fire with an assault rifle on January 17. Most of the victims were new immigrants from the Caucasus.
� In retaliation, Israel blew up the
PA headquarters in Tul Karm and the building housing the PA's radio and TV stations in Ramallah. The IDF also tightened the siege around Arafat's Ramallah HQ. On January 21, IDF tanks entered deep into Tul Karm for 30 hours, making dozens of arrests. Four Hamas members were killed by troops in Nablus the next day. Hamas then declared "al. in the current intifada. Two Palestinians were killed, bringing the toll of those killed by Israel since the start of January to 11.
� Five people were badly hurt by a Palestinian gunman on central Jerusalem's Jaffa Road on January 22. The gunman was shot dead by police.
BROTHER BARRED: Sagiv Amir, 19, brother of Rabin assassin Yigal Amir, has appealed to the Supreme Court to invalidate the IDF's refusal to induct him.
EDUCATIONAL MOVE: Avraham Ben-Shabbat, head of the Teachers' Union, resigned on January 16, amid allegations that he purchased a degree from the University of Latvia. in order to get a pay raise.
DERI STAYS IN: The Parole Board refused an application for release from former Shas leader Aryeh Deri on January 17, saying it would destroy public faith in the justice system. Deri has served half of his three-year sentence for bribery. , and was thus eligible to go free under a special law passed on his behalf. The board said freeing Deri would destroy public faith in the justice system.
