Eretz Yisrael Botanical Garden
(August 28, 2000) Next time you're at Hebrew Universitys Mount Scopus campus, whether its to attend classes or gaze at the wonderful view of Jerusalems Old City, visit the Eretz Yisrael Botanical Garden. Inconspicuously tucked in between the university and the Arab village to the east, this little spot of greenery contains enough native flora to make it feel like youve transversed all of Israel without walking more than a kilometer. More...
Nikola
(August 14, 2000) This isn't a restaurant with a view, its a restaurant in a view. Nestled on the slopes of Mt. Tzalmon, on Road 804 east of Acre, between the villages of Arabah and Ramah, its on the roof of the Nikola family home, the only building for miles, in the midst of a spectacular Galilee panorama. More...
A Place in Sejera
(July 31, 2000) In the early 1900s, when David Ben-Gurion lived and worked at Sejera in the Lower Galilee, the Danieli family home was the village hangout in the evenings. More...
Rokach House and Nachum Gutman Museum
(July 17, 2000) All small streets and courtyards, Neveh Tzedek was the first Jewish neighborhood of Jaffa, built in 1887, predating the founding of Tel Aviv by 22 years. More...

Stein-Shatz Books
(June 19, 2000) I expected to find sushi and miso soup at this little caf on Jordan's Red Sea shore, down the coast from Eilat. Admittedly, it would be a peculiar setting for such fare, but not completely outlandish - an industrial plant owned by Japan's Nippon conglomerate is right down the road. More...
Farmer's Market
(June 5, 2000) There's a run-of-the-mill shopping center on the old Tel Aviv-Haifa Road at the Bnei Dror junction, between Raananah and Netanyah, that most outsiders would happily pass by. But on a Friday morning, it would be a mistake to miss the farmers market at the Drorim Mall. More...

(May 22, 2000) I expected to find sushi and miso soup at this little caf on Jordan's Red Sea shore, down the coast from Eilat. Jacko
(May 8, 2000) The original Jacko, in an alley off Haifas produce market, gained considerable local fame and a loyal Northern clientele by serving fresh fish and seafood at modest prices. The Tel Aviv branch is newer, but every bit as popular. More...
Ramat Hanadiv Memorial Gardens
(April 24, 2000) A lion and a unicorn hold aloft a shield; below is the motto, "Concordia, Integritas, Industria." The Rothschild coat of arms, emblazoned over the iron gateway, provides a stately entrance to landscaped lawns and fountains juxtaposed with wild poppies and palm trees. A terraced garden looks out to the Mediterranean, and a large stone map depicts the Jewish settlements in Eretz Yisrael funded by Baron Edmond de Rothschild in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. More...
Artisanal French Bakery and Caf
(April 10, 2000) Buried amidst the garages, car dealers and seedy office buildings near Tel Avivs old Central Bus Station is a row of bustling upscale restaurants. You can choose between a Manhattan-style bistro, a Korean restaurant or a sushi bar, to name just a few. But Yad Harutzim Street is also the home of Artisanal, a patisserie and caf which, without fanfare or fancy dcor, serves up the most scrumptious, shamelessly rich, perfectly flaky pastries, pies and cakes Ive ever tasted in Israel. More...
Hail to the Queens!

Jordan Carriages
(February 28, 2000) Uri Sharett, our cowboy-hatted wagon driver, is shyly singing Naomi Shemer songs as we jolt along the dirt path beside the Jordan River, where it flows out of Lake Kinneret. His bulldog, Chick, dashes frenetically around the vehicle, which has pneumatic tires and a covered-wagon-style canvas top. Our clattering approach frightens gulls into flight and turtles slip back silently into the water. Its a guided hike through nature, minus the walking. More...
Binyaminah Winecellars Visitors Center
(February 14, 2000) A heavy metal door slides shut behind us, and we shiver slightly in the chilly confines of a state-of-the-art winecellar, heavy with the smell of damp wood. More...
Illegal ImmigrantsDetention Camp, Atlit
(January 31, 2000) A cockney voice barks orders from a British army jeep, "Move along! Out of the way!" Triggered by electronic eyes, these echoes from Atlits inglorious past as a British detention camp for illegal immigrants during and after World War II intrude on my thoughts as I walk around the somber site with its guard towers, heavy iron gates and barbed-wire fences. More...
Tabernacle Replica - Historical Tour - Timna Park
(January 17, 2000) Red and white cloths stretched between poles form a square courtyard in whose center stands the Tabernacle - a metal replica of the portable structure used by the ancient Israelites in lieu of a temple more than 3,000 years ago. Within the Tabernacle, replicas of holy vessels - an incense altar, the golden seven-branched candelabrum and the Ark of the Covenant - shimmer in the light. The whole attraction is set against the background of the Aravah Desert, where the park is located, 27 kms north of Eilat. More...
