Farmer's Market
Margo Lipschitz Sugarman

(June 5, 2000) There's a run-of-the-mill shopping center on the old Tel Aviv-Haifa Road at the Bnei Dror junction, between Raananah and Netanyah, that most outsiders would happily pass by. But on a Friday morning, it would be a mistake to miss the farmers market at the Drorim Mall.

Over the past year, the market has expanded from a handful of basic food stalls into a booming collection of food vendors with tastes from far and near, as well as artists and crafts people showing their wares, not to forget the handful of eponymous local farmers. The most popular destination is the Thai stall, whose fresh stir-fries are a good alternative to a home-cooked lunch. Another delight is the Tandoori Indian food stall, with a selection of authentic curries that you wouldnt expect to find in the heart of moshav land. Several stalls offer home-cooked Jewish delicacies, ranging from gefilte fish and tzimmes to stuffed peppers. And for the Middle Eastern flavors, theres fresh baklawa and an old Arab woman whose giant pitot, baked on her domed oven, are sold with traditional spices and thick, sour labaneh cheese.

Food aside, theres an ever-changing exhibition of arts and crafts, from hand-made glassware to ceramic work to jewelry, all by local artists. A stall selling fresh vegetables from a nearby moshav is popular with many of the transplanted city folk who have moved into the area in recent years.

One piece of advice: Go early, as the locals mob the place well before midday.
